Fixed braces from £2,495 · clear aligners from £1,795 at Gartside Street Dental Lounge
Across the UK, private adult braces typically cost £1,500–£5,500 depending on system and case complexity.
NHS braces are generally only available to under-18s who qualify clinically (IOTN); adult NHS orthodontics is rare, so most adults pay privately. Gartside Street is a fully private practice and does not provide NHS treatment.
Adult braces in the UK typically cost between £1,500 and £5,500. At our Manchester clinic, fixed cosmetic braces start from £2,495 for a single arch (£3,695 for both), and clear aligner treatment starts from £1,795 — with the final price depending on how much your teeth need to move.
This guide breaks down the price by system, explains what actually determines your quote, covers the retainer costs everyone forgets to budget for, and gives an honest picture of when the NHS does and does not fund orthodontics.

What affects the cost?
Complexity is the price driver. Minor front-tooth crowding that an Express aligner package fixes in a few months sits at the bottom of the range; significant crowding, rotations or bite correction needs longer treatment, more aligners or adjustment visits, and sits at the top. The system matters less than people expect — at our clinic, fixed braces and comprehensive aligner packages end up in a similar bracket for similar cases.
Two costs people forget: retainers and whitening. Retention is not optional — teeth drift back without it — so budget £150–£250 per arch for retainers at the end. Many patients also choose whitening (from £349) once the teeth are straight. Both are always quoted upfront in our written treatment plans.
NHS vs private: an honest comparison
First, full transparency: Gartside Street Dental Lounge is a fully private practice — we do not provide NHS treatment. We include NHS charges here because comparing both routes honestly is the only way to make a good decision.
For under-18s, NHS orthodontics is free where the case qualifies clinically under the IOTN scoring system — though waiting lists in Greater Manchester commonly run one to two years. For adults, NHS braces are only funded in rare, exceptional clinical cases; cosmetic alignment is never covered, which is why almost all adult orthodontics in the UK is private.
Going private buys choice of system (discreet fixed braces or removable clear aligners), no waiting list, and — at our Spinningfields clinic — dentist-led treatment with a digital preview of your result before you commit a penny.

Frequently asked questions
How much are braces in the UK for adults?
Private adult braces typically cost £1,500–£5,500 in the UK. At Gartside Street Dental Lounge in Manchester, fixed cosmetic braces start from £2,495 per arch (£3,695 for both arches) and clear aligners from £1,795, with a free consultation to confirm your exact price.
Are braces cheaper than Invisalign-style clear aligners?
Not reliably — it depends on the case. Minor cases suit Express aligners (from £1,795), which undercut fixed braces; comprehensive aligner packages (up to £3,495) and dual-arch fixed braces (from £3,695) end up in a similar bracket. We recommend whichever system genuinely fits your case.
Can adults get braces on the NHS?
Very rarely. Adult NHS orthodontics is limited to exceptional clinical need — severe functional problems, often linked to jaw surgery. Cosmetic alignment is not NHS-funded for adults, so private treatment is the realistic route for most people over 18.
Do children get free braces on the NHS?
Under-18s qualify for free NHS braces if their case scores highly enough on the IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). Borderline and purely cosmetic cases do not qualify, and NHS waiting lists in Greater Manchester often run one to two years.
Is Gartside Street Dental Lounge an NHS dentist?
No — we are a fully private dental practice and do not provide NHS treatment. We include NHS charges in this guide for honest comparison, because knowing both routes helps you make the right decision. If you would like NHS treatment, NHS.uk lists practices accepting NHS patients in Greater Manchester.
What is included in the price of braces?
At our clinic the quoted price includes the orthodontic assessment, fitting, all routine adjustment visits and removal. Retainers at the end of treatment are quoted separately (£150–£250 per arch) and included in your written plan from day one, so there are no surprise extras.
How much do retainers cost after braces?
At Gartside Street Dental Lounge: Essix clear retainers £150 per arch, Hawley retainers £195 per arch, and fixed bonded wire retainers £250 per arch. Wearing them as prescribed is what makes your result permanent.
Can I pay for braces monthly?
Yes. 0% finance through Tabeo spreads the cost over your treatment, subject to status — most patients pay monthly. Practice plan members also save 10% on treatment fees.
