What counts as a dental emergency?

If any of these sound like you, call — do not wait for it to settle: severe or throbbing toothache that painkillers barely touch; a chipped, cracked or broken tooth; a knocked-out tooth (minutes matter — see below); swelling of the gum or face, which can signal an abscess; a lost filling or crown; or bleeding and trauma after an accident. The sooner we see you, the more options we have to relieve the pain and save the tooth — untreated, an abscess or deep crack can turn a simple fix into an extraction.

What an emergency visit costs

The emergency appointment is £95, covering your examination, any X-rays needed to find the problem, and immediate advice or first-aid treatment to get you out of pain. If follow-on treatment is needed, we explain the cost before anything begins — typical examples from our transparent price list: a white filling from £195, root canal treatment from £950, an extraction from £189, and a replacement crown from £995. Practice plan members have emergency consultations included at no extra charge, and 0% finance is available for larger treatment plans.

Getting here fast

We are at 74 Gartside Street, Spinningfields, M3 3EL — a two-minute walk from Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink and a short hop from Deansgate, St Peter's Square, the Northern Quarter, Ancoats and Salford. Driving? The NCP Spinningfields car park is around the corner. If you work in the city centre, most emergency visits fit inside a long lunch — we will tell you on the phone roughly how long you should allow.

What to do while you wait to be seen

For severe toothache, take over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol and rinse with warm salt water — but never place aspirin directly on the gum, as it burns. If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown (not the root), and if you can, place it gently back in the socket; otherwise store it in milk and bring it with you — re-implantation works best within the first hour. For a broken tooth, keep any fragments, and cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum if they are cutting your tongue or cheek.

Out of hours: evenings, Sundays and bank holidays

If a dental emergency strikes outside our opening hours, call NHS 111 — they can direct you to an out-of-hours emergency dental service in Greater Manchester. Go straight to A&E if you have facial swelling that is affecting your breathing, swallowing or vision, bleeding that will not stop, or a facial injury that may involve a broken jaw. For anything that can safely wait until morning, call us when we open and we will prioritise you; anxious patients are in calm, judgement-free hands here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes severe toothache, a knocked-out or broken tooth, lost filling or crown, dental abscess, injury to the mouth, or uncontrolled bleeding from the gums. If you are unsure, contact us and we will advise.

Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?

Yes, we keep appointments available for dental emergencies and aim to see you on the same day you contact us. Call us as early as possible to secure a slot.

How much does an emergency dental visit cost?

The emergency appointment is £95, which covers your examination, any X-rays needed and immediate advice or first-aid treatment. If further treatment is required, we explain all costs before anything begins. Practice plan members have emergency consultations included at no extra charge.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, store it in milk and contact us immediately. The sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

What should I do for severe toothache before my appointment?

Take over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, rinse with warm salt water, and avoid very hot or cold foods. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum as this can cause a burn.

Do I need to be registered as a patient to be seen in an emergency?

We welcome both registered and new patients for emergency appointments. Call us and we will do our best to see you as soon as possible.

What if my emergency happens at night or on a Sunday?

Outside our opening hours, call NHS 111 for directions to an out-of-hours emergency dental service in Greater Manchester. If you have facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a possible broken jaw, go straight to A&E. Otherwise, call us first thing and we will prioritise you.

Will you treat the problem on the same visit?

Wherever possible, yes — pain relief and first-aid treatment such as a temporary filling, recementing a crown, or starting an infection on antibiotics usually happen at the emergency visit itself. More involved treatment, like a root canal or a permanent crown, is then booked as a priority follow-up.

From a recent emergency patient

I had to get an emergency consultation for a broken tooth and they were brilliant. I was seen quickly and patched up and the subsequent treatment was efficienty and rapidly arranged. Highly recommended.
