We understand dental anxiety — and we take it seriously

Dental fear is real, common and nothing to be embarrassed about. For some people it is the uneasy dread in the days before an appointment; for others it is a phobia strong enough to have kept them away from a dentist in Manchester for years. Both are valid, and both can be managed once you find a team that takes the time to understand what specifically frightens you — whether that is needles, the sound of the drill, a sensitive gag reflex, a bad memory, or the worry of being judged.

At Gartside Street Dental Lounge in Spinningfields we have deliberately built the practice around nervous patients. Because we focus on private care, we can structure the day differently: longer appointments, a calm boutique setting, and a clinician who gets to know you rather than a conveyor belt. If you would like a fuller, honest read first, our guide for nervous and anxious patients walks through everything in detail.

How we help anxious patients feel at ease

  • Unhurried appointments

We block out extra time so nothing is rushed. There is room to pause, ask questions and take breaks — time is the most underrated tool we have for anxiety.

  • No surprises — Tell-Show-Do

We explain and show you exactly what is about to happen before it does. No instrument touches you without warning.

  • A stop signal you control

We agree a simple signal at the start — usually raising your hand — and everything stops instantly, no questions asked.

  • A calm, lounge-like setting

Bring your own music and headphones, ask for a blanket and dimmed lights, and choose a quieter morning slot when the practice is calmest.

  • Gentle, near-painless injections

Numbing gel goes on first, then a slow, careful technique — most patients tell us they did not realise the injection had even happened.

  • A gentle way to start

Just tell us you are nervous in your booking notes. We brief the team in advance and let you set the pace from the very first visit.

Sedation options for anxious patients in Manchester

If you would rather not be fully alert, sedation can make treatment that has previously felt impossible feel straightforward. We offer two main levels of conscious sedation — you stay awake and able to respond throughout, and you breathe on your own the entire time.

Oral sedation

A small tablet taken about an hour before your appointment. You remain awake and able to talk to us, but the edge of the anxiety is dulled and the time passes far more quickly. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you afterwards.

IV (conscious) sedation

For more severe anxiety or longer treatment, IV sedation is given by a separately qualified sedationist with continuous monitoring. You stay responsive, but most patients remember very little of the appointment afterwards.

This is not general anaesthetic. Sedation is far gentler — you can be roused easily and recovery is usually a few hours of grogginess and nothing more. We will talk you through the right option for your treatment and your level of anxiety before anything is agreed.

Your first visit — what to expect

Your first appointment with us is deliberately not a treatment appointment. It is a chance to meet the dentist who would look after you, see the surgery, and talk through your history and your fears — with no clinical work unless you ask for it. For some patients that single calm conversation is enough; for others we are happy to meet two or three times before we pick up an instrument. Either is completely fine. You can also read about what to expect as a new patient before you arrive.

Too anxious to phone? Start however feels easiest

The path back to dental care does not have to start with a procedure — it can start with a message. Book online, send us a WhatsApp, or call when you are ready, and just say that you are nervous. We will block out extra time, brief the team, and build the visit around what works for you. Booking does not commit you to anything beyond a conversation.

Nervous patient questions, answered

Will you judge me if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

Never. A large number of the patients we see describe themselves as nervous, and many have not seen a dentist in years — some in decades. There is no lecture and no judgement about the state of your teeth or how long it has been. Our only job is to help you start again, at your pace.

What sedation options do you offer for nervous patients?

We offer two main levels of conscious sedation. Oral sedation is a small tablet taken about an hour before your appointment that takes the edge off while you stay awake — you will need someone to drive you home afterwards. For more severe anxiety or longer treatments we can arrange intravenous (IV) sedation, given by a separately qualified sedationist with continuous monitoring, after which most patients remember very little of the appointment. Both are conscious sedation, not a general anaesthetic.

I am too anxious to call — how else can I book?

That is completely normal and you are not alone. You can book online or message us on WhatsApp instead of phoning, and simply note that you are nervous. We can also arrange a short phone or video chat, or a no-treatment visit to see the practice, before any appointment so you already know the team you are meeting.

Do I have to have any treatment at my first visit?

No. For nervous patients the first visit is a consultation, not a treatment appointment. We will not carry out any treatment unless you ask us to — it is simply a chance to meet your dentist, see the surgery and agree a plan you feel comfortable with. Some patients come back two or three times before any clinical work begins, and that is absolutely fine.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

Yes. You are very welcome to bring a friend or family member. They usually wait in our lounge rather than the surgery itself, but knowing someone is nearby helps many patients feel calmer on the day.

How much does it cost to see a dentist if I am nervous?

A private new patient examination is £75 and includes a full clinical assessment; cosmetic consultations are free. We always explain any costs clearly before treatment goes ahead, and 0% finance is available through Tabeo if you would like to spread the cost. You can view our full fees on the pricing page.

Take the first step, at your pace

Book a relaxed first visit at our Spinningfields clinic and tell us you are nervous. There is no pressure to commit to treatment, and no judgement about why it has been a while.
