Root Canal Treatment in Manchester
A root canal is how we save a tooth whose nerve has become infected or inflamed — relieving the pain and keeping your natural tooth where an extraction would leave a gap. With modern techniques and local anaesthetic, treatment today feels much like having a filling.
- Pain-free treatment under local anaesthetic
- Save your natural tooth instead of extracting it
- From £950, with a fixed written quote before treatment begins
- 0% finance available, and members save 10% on all fees

What happens during root canal treatment?
- Assessment & X-rays. We examine the tooth, take X-rays to map the roots, and confirm whether a root canal is the right way to save it — with a fixed written quote before anything begins.
- Numbing. The tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. Modern root canal treatment should not hurt — most patients describe it as feeling like a long filling.
- Cleaning & shaping. The infected nerve tissue is removed and each root canal is carefully cleaned, shaped and disinfected using modern rotary instruments — front teeth have one canal; molars can have three or four.
- Sealing. The cleaned canals are filled and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter. Depending on the tooth, treatment is completed in one or two visits.
- Protecting the tooth. Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards to protect the root-treated tooth from fracturing — we plan this with you from the start so the full cost is clear up front.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?
No — the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before treatment, and most patients say it feels much like having a long filling. The toothache that brought you in is usually relieved at the first visit. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles with over-the-counter painkillers.
How much does root canal treatment cost in Manchester?
Root canal treatment at Gartside Street Dental Lounge starts from £950 (members from £855), including all visits for the root canal itself, anaesthetic and the X-rays taken during treatment. A specialist consultation with a fixed written quote is £125. If a crown is needed afterwards, that is quoted separately — from £995 — and always agreed before treatment begins.
How long does a root canal take?
Each visit takes around 60 to 120 minutes. A front tooth with a single canal can often be completed in one visit; molars, with three or four canals, usually take two. We confirm your expected number of visits at the consultation.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually do. A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, and a crown protects it from fracturing under chewing forces — without one, a successfully root-treated molar can still be lost to a crack. Front teeth can sometimes be restored with a filling alone. We advise honestly based on how much healthy tooth remains.
Is it better to have a root canal or an extraction?
Where the tooth is saveable, a root canal is almost always the better choice — keeping your natural tooth preserves your bite and avoids the cost of filling the gap later with a bridge or implant. Extraction is the right call when the tooth is too damaged to restore; we give you an honest recommendation either way.
What happens if I leave an infected tooth untreated?
The infection does not resolve on its own. It typically progresses to an abscess, with swelling and severe pain, and can damage the bone around the root — turning a saveable tooth into an extraction. If you have toothache that lingers, sensitivity to heat, or swelling, book promptly; for severe pain our emergency dentist can usually see you the same day.
Can a failed root canal be treated again?
Often, yes. Re-root canal treatment (from £950) removes the old root filling, resolves the persistent infection and reseals the canals. We assess suitability at a £125 specialist consultation with X-rays, and give you a realistic picture of the chances of success before you commit.
